Overview
The following is a list of known issues with Blackboard. Educational Technology Services are looking into these issues, and will be applying any available patches released by Blackboard as soon as they are tested and validated. In the meantime, this list will also document any possible work-arounds for the purpose of allowing you to circumventing these issues.
Blackboard Grader App for iOS not Working
Blackboard Grader App for iOS will not work with the updated version of Blackboard, Q4 2016 CU-3, starting 4 May 2017. Users logging into Bb Grader receive an error: “Something went wrong while getting assignments” or “Unable to connect to server.”
Blackboard knows about this bug, and will fix the Bb Grader App later in the summer. Until the fix is applied, please use a browser to access Blackboard.
Enrollment Problems with Child Courses
Enrollments in child sections of merged courses, mostly students but occasionally instructors, have been switching from enabled to disabled, the latter status preventing access to the course. The problem is a known bug in Blackboard, and their suggested work-around causes additional enrollment problems in some cases. We look forward to quickly implementing their fix to this bug when it is released later this month. In the meantime, we’re doing the following:
- Suspending the processing of the enrollment feed file for the Spring 2017 term (2174) for 7 and 8 January. This will prevent further enrollment disruption during the weekend.
- Running the enrollment feed file on 9 January, and likely everyday thereafter, in a different mode which only adds user accounts to courses and does not disable any accounts whose statuses are not already unavailable.
- Continuing to use our administrative access to change enrollment statuses when instructors request it.
The biggest side effect will be that students who drop courses in the near future will still be able to see their courses in Blackboard. This situation will exist for a week or two but is preferable to the sporadic enrollment problems we’ve seen this week.
We’ll continue to update this post as our options to deal with the problem improve.

Students Cannot Submit Papers Through Turnitin in Blackboard
Some students in some classes are unable to upload documents to Turnitin assignments through Blackboard. Using Turnitin alone (without Blackboard) does not cause this error. When attempting to upload a document to Turnitin within Blackboard, some students receive this error message:
“Failed to register user in Turnitin with Exception: Failed to read Turnitin API user for Turnitin user ID: xxxyyyzzz with error: User not found.”
Reason
The error occurs because the user already exists in Turnitin but is not associated with the account in the Blackboard course.
Fix
Turnitin has identified the error and will update its code at some point. We will implement this change as soon as Turnitin makes it available.
Work Around

In the meantime, please email etc@cidde.pitt.edu if you or your students get this error. We can work with Turnitin to add students to Turnitin directly so they can submit their Turnitin Assignments through Blackboard
Students Experiencing Difficulties Uploading Submissions to Turnitin Assignments in Blackboard
Some students are experiencing difficulties uploading documents to Turnitin assignments in Blackboard. The issue applies to some, but not all students. When attempting to upload a document, students are receiving this error message:
“Error Submitting Paper: This paper was rejected because Turnitin cannot check it for originality. There are three possible reasons for Turnitin being unable to check a file for originality:
- If the file type cannot be determined (eg. the file has no extension).
- If the file type is not one of the supported types ( The file types Turnitin can analyse are: Microsoft Word Document (.doc, .docx), Plain text (.txt), PDF (.pdf), HTML (.html), Rich Text (.rtf), Open Office Writer Document (.odt), Corel WordPerfect Document (.wpd), Hangul (.hwp), and PostScript (.eps)).
- If the file has fewer than 100 characters.”
Files that do in fact meet the criteria outlined in this message are incorrectly being rejected by the Turnitin building block in some cases.
Fix
We are currently working with Turnitin and Blackboard to determine the source of the issue.
Work Around
The issue is restricted to the Turnitin building block within Blackboard. Instructors can upload submissions on behalf of students at http://www.turnitin.com/. Unfortunately these assignments will not show up directly in Blackboard, and grades in the Grade Center will need to be entered manually. If you would like students to view feedback, they will need to register and create a profile at http://www.turnitin.com/. They will need the class ID and enrollment password. Instructions on how to find this information can be found on pages 23/24 in this Instructor Handbook. Enrollment instructions for students can be found in this Student QuickStart Guide.
Blackboard’s Math Editor Won’t Return Image
This was resolved on 29 March 2016. Blackboard’s Math Editor lets users select images but then returns an error rather than the selected image. The error will appear as an icon or the message, “Error connecting to the latex translator service.”
Fix
The problem results from a configuration issue and may not be resolved until the fall term.
Work Around
There are free online math editors, including Online LaTeX Equation Editor, which allow users to generate images, HTML, and other formats for math equations that can then be placed into Blackboard.

Mixed Content Filter Blocks Videos and Other Content
Certain browsers have been found to restrict unsecured content in Blackboard. Currently, the most recent version of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox have been shown to do this. At this time, content blocked by this mixed content filter include but are not limited to:
- The Panopto Course Tool Application
- Video content embedded using iframe code (<iframe>), using which some Panopto, YouTube and Kaltura videos may be displayed.
Below are the workarounds you will need to view streaming media in these two browsers.
For Firefox:
Find your way to a page in Blackboard with content being blocked. Your indication that the Mixed Content Filter is in effect will be a shield-shaped icon to the left of your address bar:
To Disable:
Click this icon and find the drop-down menu it presents:
Select the arrow on the bottom right menu bar to look at your options:
Select “Disable Protection on This Page.” This will refresh the page, which should send you back to the Announcements. Find your way back to the page with the previously blocked content, and it should load properly now.
For Chrome:
Find your way to a page in Blackboard with content being blocked. Your indication that the Mixed Content Filter is in effect will be a shield-shaped icon to the right of your address bar:
To Disable:
Click this icon and find the drop-down menu it presents:
Select “Load unsafe script” and click “Done.” This will refresh the page, which should send you back to the Announcements. Find your way back to the page with the previously blocked content, and it should load properly now.
These workarounds are not permanent, meaning that if you close the window or open a new tab, you will once again encounter this roadblock, and have to go through these steps to unblock your content.

Panopto Issues with OSX El Capitan
We wanted to let you know about a few Panopto issues with the latest releases of OSX, Keynote and PowerPoint.
Problem #1: On OSX 10.11 (El Capitan), some users may experience a false positive error message of “Problem with video capture. No video is being recorded. Check your camera.”
Problem #2: On all versions of OSX, some PowerPoint 2016 users may receive an “Additional permissions are required to access the following file” prompt. This prompts the user to change the file level permissions to allow access to the .pptx file.
Problem #3: On all versions of OSX, all Mac recordings that capture Keynote 6.6 files will fail to upload.
Workaround/Resolution for problems #1, #2, and #3: For existing Mac Recorder installations, upgrade to the latest version of the Mac Recorder. If you want to force an upgrade of your Mac clients, go to System – Settings – Client Versions & Identification – Mac Recorder Whitelist – remove 4.9.0 and click save. Then go to Mac Recorder Version and set the value to 4.9.1.
- New Mac Recorder installations of version 4.9.0 will contain the above fixes.
- With these fixes, OSX 10.11 (El Capitan) is now fully supported.
- For deployed customers, the 4.9.1 Mac Recorder is supported on any server version that is 4.9 or higher. For problem #3, a server side update is required for slide content to display slide text correctly. This server update will be available in our next major version update in early January).
Problem #4: PowerPoint 2016 15.14 and the trial versions are not compatible with the Panopto Mac Recorder.
Workaround/Resolution: Users must use a non-trial version of PowerPoint 2016. If users have version 15.14, they must upgrade to 15.15 (or higher) which can be downloaded here.

Panopto Issues With Internet Explorer
We would like to make you aware of the following issue:
Issue: Panopto for Windows and Remote Recorder downloads in Internet Explorer 11 are being flagged as corrupt or invalid due to deprecation of support by Microsoft for executables packaged with a SHA-1 signed certificate issued after January 1, 2016.
Who is affected: Both On-Prem and Cloud users using Internet Explorer 11 and downloading version 5.0 Panopto for Windows and/or the Remote Recorder.
Status: Our operations team has began the work required to resolve this issue.
Recommendation: There are currently a couple of suggested workarounds:
- A different internet browser may be used to download the Panopto software.
- Panopto Support can set the download version to 4.9.1 until the updated 5.0 binaries are available.

Panopto Audio Error
Enabling “Capture Computer Audio” results in randomly truncated recording – Panopto for Windows, Remote Recorder
Problem
If “Capture Computer Audio” is selected, there is a chance that the product may stop capturing audio sometime during a recording. This results in the session ending prematurely and without warning.
What products are affected
- Panopto for Windows v5.0, v5.1
- Panopto Remote Recorder v5.0, v5.1
How do I resolve this issue?
Download and install the latest version of Panopto for Windows or Panopto Remote Recorder. This issue is resolved in the product versions listed below:
- Panopto for Windows x86: 5.1.0.26220 or later
- Panopto for Windows x64: 5.1.0.26221 or later
- Panopto Remote Recorder: 5.1.0.26252 or later
Note: Panopto for Mac is not affected.
Panopto Mobile Login Error
Due to the recently updated single-sign-on function at Pitt, users are not currently able to sign into Panopto Mobile with their Pitt accounts. A fix is in the works, and will be implemented as soon as possible.
Silverlight Not Working in Google Chrome
In Chrome v42 and newer, Google disables NPAPI plugins by default. Silverlight is a NPAPI plugin that is currently required to use the Panopto Editor, upload media, and view legacy Panopto sessions.
According to Google:
In the past, many plugins were developed using an old system called NPAPI. Today fewer sites are using NPAPI plugins and they have often caused security risks on websites.
To make browsing with Chrome safer, faster, and more stable, we stopped allowing NPAPI plugins on September 1, 2015.
Plugins that use NPAPI, including Silverlight, Java, and Unity, won’t work. If you want to use a website that uses an NPAPI plugin, you’ll need to use a different web browser.

Panopto 4.6 No Longer Supports Webcasts
Panopto Focus Recorders for Windows prior to the 4.7 release rely on WMV for live streaming, which will be phased out. As a result, if you are currently using a pre-4.7 version of the Panopto recorder, your live webcasts will no longer work starting on March 27, 2015.
To view which version you are currently running:
For Windows
Click the Settings tab to find the version in the bottom right corner.
For Mac
Click “Panopto” in your upper toolbar and select “About” to find the version.
To prevent this from causing any issues after March 27, 2015, make sure to download the most recent version of the Panopto Focus Recorder Application (keeping in mind that this is only for the Windows recorder, not the one for Mac).
YouTube Mashup Tool Error
The YouTube Mashup Tool returns an error when attempting to open videos or search for new videos to add.
When attempting to open videos, the following message appears: “We are unable to display the mashup content. This happens if the system detects an invalid URL. Remove the mashup item and try again to resolve this issue.”
When attempting to search for videos, the following message appears: “Error: An error was returned by YouTube: No longer available.”
Workaround:
Find your video in YouTube, and copy/paste the url into a Web Link in Blackboard.
You can also embed YouTube videos by copying the Embed Code from YouTube, and pasting it into the HTML box of a Blackboard Item. First, go to your YouTube Video, select Share, and then Embed to find the embed code. Copy it, and go to your Blackboard Course.
Once in Blackboard, create a new Item.
Title your video item and then scroll down to the Text Box Editor. Select the HTML tool button in the toolbar over the text editor, and a pop-up window will appear.
Right-click and Paste the Embed Code into the text field and click Update.
9. A yellow box should now be visible in the text editor.
Click Submit and your video should appear.

Multiple File Upload Failure on Mac
Multiple File Upload is a function in the Content Collection that allows you to upload multiple files at once. The service retains full functionality on all tested browsers for PC, but experiences some errors on Macintosh computers.
Expected result:
Clicking and dragging files to the drag-and-drop window adds the content to your upload queue.
Actual Result:
The files fail to be added, and instead opens in the browser, triggering the browser to either open or save the file.
Workaround:
- Option 1 – Click the “Browse” button to add multiple files.
- Option 2 – Add multiple files to a ZIP package, and upload using the “Upload Zip Package” option, which will unpack the ZIP file automatically after uploading. This option will also keep any sub-folders within the ZIP file.

Unable to Reuse Test Questions
When creating test questions in the Test Canvas area, normally you have the option of copying questions from other tests, surveys or question pools.
When you select the Find Questions area, a pop-up window appears, allowing you to filter through all questions available in your tests, surveys and question pools. Depending on your browser, this is where the error occurs. For Internet Explorer and Google Chrome, the page encounters an error and crashes. For Firefox, you get the error message at the top of the page below, in addition to being unable to select any of the questions.
Expected Result:
Being able to select questions from your question pools normally.
Actual Result:
Being unable to select or sometimes even load the window to display your question pools.
Workaround:
So far, the only workaround seems to be to use Firefox version 28 or below or Safari. Blackboard is aware of the issue, and will be releasing a patch to fix this soon.
Posts In Global Navigation Reveals Adaptive Release Content
Steps to Replicate: Create 2 groups: Group 1 and Group 2.
- Enroll one student in each group.
- Create 2 Discussion Board’s with adaptive releases to be seen only by one group, so Discussion board 1 can only seen by Group 1 and Discussion board 2 can only seen by Group 2.
- Student in Group 1 logs in and post something in Discussion board 1.
- Student in Group 2 logs in, go to the Global Navigation Post option and the post from the student in Group 1 is visible.
Expected Result:
Copy/Paste Error
When copy/pasting into a text field in Blackboard, some users may experience an error. When using the right-click method to copy and paste, Edit menu bar method, or text editor toolbar method, you will most likely receive the following message.
However, some browsers have been shown to be unable to copy/paste using the keyboard shortcuts as well, leaving no options with which to copy/paste.
Expected Result:
Ctrl+V / Cmd+V pastes a string of text into the text editor.
Actual Result:
Nothing happens.
Workaround:
So far, the only workaround is to use the HTML source mode to paste text. Blackboard is aware of the issue, and will be releasing a patch to fix this soon.
Multiple Test Exception Error

When creating a test in Blackboard, it is possible to add different criteria for students or groups of students, such as different dates and times. It is possible to add exceptions for multiple students or groups of students, however if they are not all entered at the same time, Blackboard will encounter an error when trying to add additional exceptions afterward.
Expected Result:
Able to add multiple exceptions after saving the first one.
Actual Result:
All additional exceptions fail to save
Workaround:
This is a known issue with Blackboard, and they are working on a solution. In the meantime, the only workaround is to enter all your exceptions at the same time, or exporting and re-importing your test if you have already saved your first exception. Faculty have had marginal success with logging out and clearing their web cache as well.
Test Attempts do not Submit if Option is Checked while Taking the Test
Test attempts will not submit if the option to ‘Prevent this page from creating additional dialogs’ is checked while taking the Test.
Steps to Replicate:
- Log into Blackboard as a Student
- Navigate to a Course with an Assessment
- Take Assessment
- Click the save button next to a question
- Click another save button (Browser should now give you option to disable alerts)
- Disable alerts and click ok
- Click another save button and make sure you do not get alert
- Click save and submit
Expected Result:
Grade Center Scroll Bar Does Not Appear On Mac
In the Grade Center, there are scroll-bars on the bottom and the right-hand sides that allow you to scroll through the columns and rows to see your full grade center. On Mac OSX, there is a setting that normally allows scroll bars to fade out when not needed to increase window visibility, but in the Grade Center, the scroll bars do not reappear with this setting turned on.
Expected Result:
To be able to use scroll bars in the grade center
Actual Result:
Unable to locate scroll bars
Workaround:
Go to your Mac’s System Preferences, and open up the General area.
Set Show scroll bars: to “Always.”
Grade Center Weighted Total Column Showing Extra Decimal Places
The decimal places for percentages are displaying out to 4 places in the Grade Center. Documentation on the Grade Center indicates that while
calculations are based on four decimal places. Only two decimal places should be displayed.
Steps to Replicate:
- Log in to Blackboard Learn as an Administrator
- Enter a course that contains a Weighted Column
- Enter the Full Grade Center and view the Weighted Total Column
Expected Result:
Two decimal places are visible for weighted columns.
Actual Result:
Up to four decimal places are visible for weighted columns.
This is a known issue in Blackboard. Unfortunately, Blackboard does not have any current plans to patch this issue.
Exporting Tests to Content Collection Exports All Course Files
When exporting tests in Blackboard, it is possible to save the export package to either your computer or your content collection. If you are using a course that was created prior to the SP 14 upgrade (which will consist of courses for the summer of 2014), then when saving this package to the content collection, you will likely experience a bug that causes your entire course to be exported along with it.
Expected Result:
Exporting test saves a ZIP file of your test to your Content Collection.
Actual Result:
Exporting test saves the entire course to your Content Collection.
Workaround:
Export to Local Computer, and upload to Content Collection afterward.

Statistics Tracking Error
When attempting to generate a Student Overview for Single Course report, the report is returning incomplete results
Steps to Replicate:
1. Log onto Blackboard Learn
2. Navigate into a Course
3. Go to Control Panel > Go to Evaluation > Click on Course Reports
4. Click Student Overview for Single Course report chevron > Click Run
5. Select Student and Date > Click Submit
Expected Result:
A detailed report and general data about the activity.
Actual Result:
Only the overview data of how many logins and how many items were accessed, but not the detailed data.
Workaround:
This is a known issue with Blackboard, and they are working on a solution. The issue should be resolved in the next Blackboard update.

Profile Page Does Not Load in Firefox
If you are trying to create your profile within the new Social Learning features in Blackboard, you must first enable third-party cookies. If third-party cookies are not enabled, you will receive a Not Logged In message (pictured above) even though you clearly are logged into the system. This setting change is only required when using Firefox as the browser and is computer-specific (meaning you might have to make this adjustment if you use multiple computers on campus). Once the change has been made, the setting will hold on subsequent log ins.
A cookie, in this case, is not a delicious afternoon snack. It is a small piece of data sent from the website you are visiting to the browser you are using. When you return to that same website, the data previously stored is sent back to the website informing it of your previous activities. Third-party cookies provide this same functionality, but they have a different domain name from the website you are visiting. Firefox automatically disables third-party cookies, but many of the new features in Blackboard, including Video Everywhere and the Social Learning tools, require third-party cookie access.
NOTE: In order for these changes to take effect, you must be logged out of Blackboard.
- Click on the orange Firefox button in the upper, lefthand corner.
- Hover over Options to reveal an additional menu.
- Click on Options.
- Go to the Privacy tab.
- If the History section is collapsed, you will need to click the down arrow next to Remember History and select Use custom settings for history.
- Make sure that the box in front of Accept cookies from sites is checked.
- Select Always from the drop down menu next to Accept third-party cookies.
- Click OK.
If you ever receive a warning that you are not logged in when using the Social Learning features of Blackboard or Video Everywhere will not record after you’ve logged in to your YouTube account, check for the acceptance of third-party cookies using the steps above.

Do Some Research and Get Your Tools
Once you’ve got a grip on basic coding, you need to take a deep dive into web applications and how they work. Lucky for you, there’s tons of great resources out there that can point you in the right direction. Start by reading:
- The Web Application Hacker’s Handbook ($30)
- OWASP Testing Guide v4
Then get the right tools. You’ll need:
- Kali Linux (free)
- Burp Suite ($349 a year, but very popular)
- OWASP Zap (free alternative to Burp Suite)
Then check out the OWASP WebGoat lab, where you can practice finding bugs and vulnerabilities in web applications, and take a look at the Google Bughunter University as well. They have lots of great information bug hunting and how to write solid vulnerability reports that will get you paid. Sites like Bugcrowd and HackerOne can help with that aspect as well.

Once you’re armed with knowledge and the right tools, you’re ready to look for some bugs to squash. Companies will often have a link somewhere on their website offering bug bounties, but they can be hard to find. You’re better off checking a bounty board where hackers are reading publicly disclosed vulnerability reports and updating an active list on the daily. Like these:

- Bugcrowd
- Vulnerability Lab
- Fire Bounty
HackerOne also offers Disclosure Assistance, which is a place where a hacker can report any vulnerability to any organization. Even if the organization doesn’t have a vulnerability program, they can contact them and deliver the report. It also helps to join a bug bounty hunter community forum—like those sites listed above—so you can stay up to date on new bounties and tools of the trade. To hunt bugs you also have to be willing to continually learn as you go. Web applications and bug hunting tools are constantly updating, so you need to be on the ball if you want to do things right.
